Chuck Chadwick: The Godfather of Church Security

For over two decades, Chuck Chadwick has been a trailblazer in safeguarding America’s houses of worship, earning the title “Godfather of Church Security.” A Texas native and son of a Methodist minister, he brought 40 years of private security experience, including fine art protection, Certified Protection Specialist credentials, and numerous law enforcement and instructor certifications, to faith-based security.

The 9/11 attacks inspired him to focus on churches. He served as the first Director of Security at Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas (2002-2005), overseeing a 40-officer team as the multi-site congregation grew rapidly. In 2002, he founded the Gatekeepers Alliance (which later became the National Organization for Church Security and Safety Management, or NOCSSM, in 2007). He launched the first National Church Security Conference in 2005 at Prestonwood Baptist Church.

In 2006, Chadwick established Gatekeepers Security Services to provide churches with professional volunteer-based security, well before Texas Senate Bill 2065 legalized it in 2015. In 2009, he founded the Christian Security Institute (CSI) in Frisco, Texas, a state-licensed school that trains volunteers from a Christian perspective.

The Gatekeepers Program equips church volunteers with training that meets Texas professional security officer licensing standards. It covers firearms, hand-to-hand combat, baton use, handcuffing, and use of force, while blending vigilance with biblical hospitality (inspired by 1 Chronicles 9). The program serves both small and large churches, as well as private Christian schools, and has been adopted by hundreds of congregations. Unlike recent laws allowing unlicensed armed teams, Chadwick’s model emphasizes licensed, trained, and accountable professionals.

Chuck’s family, including wife Marian (Vice President) and son Will (instructor), supports operations and training. His work has trained thousands of volunteers across hundreds of churches nationwide. Media outlets (NBC, CBS, KERA, and others) frequently call on him as an expert following incidents like the Sutherland Springs (2017) and West Freeway Church of Christ (2019) shootings.

Today, as founder and president of NOCSSM, licensed security manager of Gatekeepers Security Services, and leader of CSI, Chuck Chadwick remains the most recognized Protestant figure in U.S. church security. His pioneering programs, conferences, and faith-driven framework continue to help churches of all sizes proactively protect their congregations while staying true to their ministry calling.

Chuck and Marian have been married for over 25 years and throughout their lives together, they have worked together in various businesses and industries.

Marian’s career extends from Top Producing recruiter for 20 years in the DFW area, computer networking, training and web design to owning a retail boutique shop for 10 years in Frisco.

Marian was raised in Texas with strong Christian roots and as Chuck says, “We have a mixed marriage, she was raised Assembly of God and I was a Methodist ministers son.”  We both came to Christ fully in our 30’s and haven’t looked back.  God has been so good to us and shown us unconditional love and favor in all we have set out to do together.  Amazing story of God’s grace and mercy to two sinners searching for meaning and direction as youths.

Clayton has handled firearms his entire life. As a boy, he and his dad competed in F-class competitions and enjoyed backpacking hunts for elk in Colorado. In 2017 his interest in competitive shooting skyrocketed and he began attending local PRS matches to see what it was all about. Each year his skill, knowledge, and adaptability have increased. Coaching others in the sport has proven successful as his amateur selected for each years’ Pro-Am competition typically outshoots many pros! He has competed in both Tactical and Open classes and ends each season among the top shooters in the world and has mastered the art of reloading for maximum performance. His passion for accuracy, desire to know the “why” behind all technical components, and competitive nature make him both a great competitor and a coach.
