U.S. Federal Government releases a guide for Church Security –

The Federal Government recently came out with the Guide for Developing High-Quality Emergency Operation Plans for Houses of Worship. (Click the title to download it from the government site). The guide is dated June 2013 and includes sections on the Planning process, Plan content, a closer look at the Active Shooter Situation and a Reference.

The sections on the plans are adequate, well thought out and generic. There is really nothing addressing anything “church specific”.

It is the section on Responding to an Active Shooter incident that sparked the interest of most people.

The Federal guide lays out a three-part plan of “Run”, “Hide” and “Fight”. You have to realize that this is written for people that are not Gatekeepers (follow this link to find out more about the Gatekeeper program). The paper is trying to address strategies for the defenseless, as in unarmed women and children.

When it comes to the Fight section we quote-” If neither running or hiding is a safety option, as a last resort, when confronted by the shooter, adults in immediate danger should consider trying to disrupt or incapacitate the shooter by using aggressive force and items in their environment, such as fire extinguishers or chairs.”

It is with the guidance of the United States Federal government that we are pleased to announce the newest courses on Advanced Fire Extinguisher Tactics and the ancient art of Chair Throwing. We have scanned the globe to bring you such rare knowledge. Course curriculum is being compiled, as we speak and will be announced soon.

We also want to introduce our own three point Active Shooter Plan; “Draw”, “Aim”, “Fire”. We are also working on this curriculum and will announce our class schedule soon.
